Jana Williams Workshop | Preview

It was a busy weekend, folks! By far, one of the highlights was spending time with the lovely Jana Williams of Jana Williams Photography as an attendee of her 2016 workshop.

I have a whole variety of thoughts and nuggets from the workshop I want to share, but in the meantime, I wanted to share a few images to preview the gorgeous styled session from the day! More to come soon!

xoxo

A Reminder: Take the LEAP!

It's Friday over here (hooray!) and I'm here to encourage everyone to TAKE THE LEAP! That means different things for different people, no question. I've had several conversations recently with people who are just incredibly discouraged and since I'm not one immune to having bad days myself, I've tried to gently remind them of the things that matter and hopefully provide some encouragement along the way. I have many sources of inspiration, but this one is by far the one that persistently reminds me of the importance of the hustle, but also about how to make what matters happen.

This week, what mattered to me was that I was productive, yet restful. It's a delicate balance, but somehow I was able to pull it off by really dedicating some good time to work and said 'no' to a lot of things I could have been doing. Today, I have a day off to show for it before heading into a busy weekend as I shoot back to back wedding and engagement sessions.

I basically live by this incredible inspiration provided by Lara Casey (she's amazing, by the way!), and I'll shamelessly admit to you that this piece of paper hangs in more than one place in my office.

Because sometimes I need all the reminders I can get.

So to all my friends, colleagues and clients - make it happen. Do whatever it takes to set things in the right trajectory and own what you can and let all the rest go. Then, let's keep reminding each other of this!

Cheers for a great weekend!

My favorite: send it, START IT, say it, make the CALL, LET IT GO, send that email and take that risk!

Field Trip | Sunrise at Griffith Observatory and Los Angeles Flower Mart

It's no secret I'm a huge fan of adventure and seeing new things. In fact, it's the images I capture as I travel around (whether it be near or far), are what inspire me the most. It's when I feel myself come alive. As I pondered 2015 and what I wanted to accomplish in 2016, I decided one of the things I want to focus on is getting out more and sharing what I see all around me. Since most of the time I'm shooting weddings (which are AMAZING!), I wanted to provide myself the opportunity for some diverse photos. From this, an idea for J. Lee Field Trips was born. I have the pleasure of being able to travel several places, and I happen to live in the wonderful city of Los Angeles. There should be no shortage of things to get out and see :) I want to share my experiences with both friends and clients, which is why I'll be documenting them here on the blog. Thank you for coming along with me on this journey as I venture out to push myself more and express more of what I see is beautiful through my lens.

I thought there would  be nothing better than beginning my first field trip on the last day of 2015. I've wanted to see the sunrise at Griffith Park for some time, and decided I needed to just commit to do it. So, it was first on my list. The other thing I've really wanted to do, but just haven't made the time to do it? See the LA flower market. Why? I absolutely adore love plants and flowers. It's one of my favorite things to photograph and I wanted to get some fresh flowers because they make me so incredibly happy. It's the small things, folks :)

Rieke Roadtrip, Part I | PCH + Big Sur

It's been a busy couple months and I've been SO eager to revisit the photos we took from our big travel adventure of 2015. Several of these images are actually now available for purchase in the J. Lee Photos Print Shop, so be sure to take a look! Back in October, Kenneth and I decided to opt for a week-long domestic adventure rather than one overseas. We thought it seemed appropriate to take our time traveling up the coast as we made our way to Yosemite to complete (our first ever!) half marathon.

We ventured out of LA and started our trek up the PCH and stopped here and there along the way. Although the weather was a bit dreary (and WINDY), we loved taking in the sites of the ocean and the seals at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery. Our goal was to make it up to Big Sur to camp for a few nights at the incredible Ventana Campground. There are definitely no shortage of incredible places to stay and explore in Big Sur, but we highly recommend Ventana.

We set up camp in time for it to start raining on us and we loved waking up to the fresh air among the breathtaking Redwoods. As luck would have it, we scored campsite #20, which is by far the most secluded and spacious of the entire camp, with the exception of our raccoon and deer visitors each night. It was so fun to see them up so close to us!

After getting some food, we spent the rest of our day heading up the coast and timing it right to be at the Bixby Creek Bridge at sunset.

Thankful to see such beauty all around and the thrill of getting shots like this is hard to really even put into words. I'll let the photo do the talking, instead!

We wrapped up our time in Big Sur by staying up way past our old person bedtime and headed over to the Esalen Institute for a late-night hot springs experience.

Each morning, you're able to call in as a member of the public to the Esalen Institute and get your name on the list to use the hot springs. There was no better way to end our time in Big Sur than under the stars, in a hot bath while overlooking the ocean in peace.

Stay tuned for Part II, as we head further up the coast to Carmel and make our way to The City.
